Every southern winter, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to breed and calve in the warm, sheltered waters off the south of Grande Terre.

When

The season runs roughly from mid-July to mid-September, with August usually the peak.

Where

Most trips leave from Nouméa or the Great South and head to Prony Bay and the southern lagoon. Whales are sometimes seen from shore at Cap N'Dua.

Watching responsibly

  • Choose operators that follow the Province Sud's whale-watching charter on distances and approach speeds.
  • Expect a full day out; seas can be choppy, so take seasickness tablets if needed.

Pair your trip with the Great South sights on another day.
