New Caledonia is a year-round destination, but September to November offers the best mix of sunshine, low rainfall and warming seas.
The seasons
Hot season (December–March)
Hot and humid, with temperatures often around 30°C and the highest rainfall. This is also cyclone season (roughly November to April), so travel insurance and flexibility matter. Water is at its warmest, around 27–28°C.
Transition (April–May)
Rain eases and temperatures drop; a good value shoulder season.
Cool season (June–August)
Days around 22–24°C, cool nights and fresh trade winds. Ideal for hiking, and humpback whales arrive from July.
Dry season (September–November)
Sunny, dry and pleasantly warm: our favourite time to visit.
Events
- August: the Bourail agricultural fair.
- July–September: whale-watching season.
- Late December–January: summer holidays and busy hotels.
