Nouméa sits on a hilly peninsula on the southwest of Grande Terre, the main island, and is home to roughly two-thirds of New Caledonia's population. For visitors it works as a comfortable base: good hotels, the territory's best restaurants, an easy-going beach strip, and boats that run out to the coral islets of the southern lagoon.
The bays: Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons
Most visitors stay along the two southern bays. Anse Vata is the broad, breezy beach with hotels, the Aquarium des Lagons and water taxis to Îlot Canard and Îlot Maître; on windy afternoons it fills with kitesurfers. Next door, Baie des Citrons (Lemon Bay) is calmer for swimming and lined with bars and restaurants that get lively at sunset. A seaside promenade links the two and continues around the headland, so it is easy to explore on foot.
Culture and the city centre
The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, Renzo Piano's landmark tribute to Kanak culture on the Tina peninsula, is the one sight not to miss. In town, the Place des Cocotiers is the leafy heart of the centre, the Port Moselle market is busiest early in the morning, and the twin-towered Saint-Joseph Cathedral looks out over the harbour. The Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie covers Kanak and Pacific heritage, while the Musée de la Ville tells the colonial and penal-colony story.
Islets and the lagoon
A short boat hop from Anse Vata puts you on Îlot Canard, with its snorkelling trail, or Îlot Maître, known for its overwater bungalows. Further out, the full-day cruise to Amédée Lighthouse is a classic.
Practical tips
- Many shops close at lunchtime and on Sunday afternoons; restaurants usually serve lunch from about 11:30 to 14:00 and dinner from 19:00.
- La Tontouta International Airport is about 50 km north; allow 45 to 60 minutes by road. See airport transfers.
- Domestic flights to the islands now leave from La Tontouta too, so you may not need to overnight in town before an island hop.
