Lifou (Drehu) lies about 200 km east of Grande Terre and is the biggest of the Loyalty Islands. Life here is organised around customary chiefdoms, so a visit is as much about Kanak hospitality as it is about beaches.
Highlights
- Jokin cliffs in the north, with a staircase down to sheltered coves of electric-blue water.
- Jinek Bay near Easo, a protected marine area with an easy snorkel trail over coral and tropical fish.
- The Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes at Easo, perched above the bay with sweeping views.
- Luecila Bay in the east, a long, calm beach ideal for swimming.
- The vanilla house (Maison de la Vanille) to learn how Lifou's famous vanilla is grown and cured.
Staying on Lifou
Options range from simple tribal gîtes and campsites to small hotels, including the newer Wadra Bay resort. Staying with a family in a tribal gîte, with dinner cooked in the traditional earth oven, is a highlight for many visitors.
