Short answer: most visitors travel without problems, but you should plan with a little more flexibility than before 2024.

What happened

In May 2024, protests over electoral reform turned into serious riots in Greater Nouméa, closing the international airport for about two weeks. Tourists were not targeted, but the unrest hit tourism hard.

Where things stand

  • In May 2026 the US State Department lowered its advisory for New Caledonia to Level 2 ('exercise increased caution'), citing crime rather than unrest.
  • Australia and Canada still advise visitors to stay alert, as protests and disruption can occur at short notice.
  • International airlines have been returning: Air New Zealand resumed flights in late 2025 and Fiji Airways restarted Nadi–Nouméa flights in September 2026.
  • Domestic flights now leave from La Tontouta. Isle of Pines services have been more dependable than Loyalty Islands routes, and Ouvéa flights resumed on 10 September 2026 after a suspension.

Sensible precautions

  • Check your government's latest advice before you go and register with your embassy where possible.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers disruption.
  • Leave a buffer day between island flights and your international departure.
  • Avoid demonstrations and unlit rural roads at night, and don't leave valuables in cars.
