New Caledonia is ringed by one of the world's largest lagoons, so great beaches are everywhere. These are our favourites.
- Kuto Bay, Isle of Pines: a long, sheltered arc of the softest white sand. Guide.
- Kanumera Bay, Isle of Pines: small, photogenic and great for snorkelling around its rock.
- Ouvéa's lagoon beach: about 25 km of near-empty sand. Guide.
- Mouli, Ouvéa: impossibly blue water by the famous bridge.
- Luecila Bay, Lifou: calm, shallow and fringed with palms.
- Jinek Bay, Lifou: more a snorkel site than a beach, but unforgettable.
- Pédé Beach, Maré: wild, white and usually deserted.
- Poé Beach, Bourail: the West Coast's best lagoon beach for families and watersports.
- Anse Vata, Nouméa: lively city beach with water taxis to the islets.
- Îlot Canard: a tiny islet beach with a snorkel trail, minutes from town.
Beach safety: watch for stonefish and cone shells, wear reef shoes on coral, and respect the 'tricot rayé' sea snakes on the islets.
