In 2008 UNESCO listed the 'Lagoons of New Caledonia: Reef Diversity and Associated Ecosystems' as a World Heritage Site. The barrier reef encircling Grande Terre is one of the longest in the world, and the lagoons shelter turtles, dugongs, rays, reef sharks and a dazzling variety of corals.

Easy ways in include the Îlot Canard snorkel trail, Amédée, Jinek Bay on Lifou and the Oro natural pool. Divers head for the passes, such as Boulari near Nouméa. Use reef-safe sunscreen, don't touch or stand on coral, and choose operators that respect marine reserves.
