Hienghène is the jewel of the East Coast. In its bay stands the Poule Couveuse, a limestone rock shaped like a brooding hen, with the 'Sphinx' nearby. Just south, the black, jagged Lindéralique cliffs plunge into the sea.

Local guides offer boat trips around the rocks, kayaking, reef snorkelling and walks to tribal villages. The Goa Ma Bwarhat cultural centre showcases local Kanak art and history.
